L’Atlas

L'Atlas is a French artist born in 1978, is a French artist born in 1978, who lives and works in Paris. He began doing graffiti in the early 1990s. Fascinated by the history of handwriting, he has studied calligraphy in several countries and designed his own typography. He frequently works in public spaces and has become a major figure of the Street Art movement. He has also developed a pictorial universe, where he leads the written word towards calligraphic abstraction.

However, calligraphy is not his only influence: urban modern architecture, archaeology, geography, Greek mythology, Oriental philosophy and astronomy are the sources of his artistic production. As his name suggest, the artist aims at creating a universal language, a writing that can be understood by everyone, but where the content comes only secondarily. Cities are represented in his works as geometrical and graphical labyrinths, primitive and contemporary at the same way. In his works, he always uses black and white to make the city readable as a text, to go straight to its essence. L’Atlas has worked with different techniques and mediums, from graffiti to posters, from stencils to scotch tape.

The artist has exhibited his works in prestigious institutions such as Musée de la Poste, Palais de Tokyo and Centre Georges Pompidou. Among his most notable exhibitions are Oxymores, Ministère de la culture et de la communication (Paris, France, 2015), 50 ans d’art urbain à Paris, Galerie du Crédit Municipal (Paris, France, 2015), L’Atlas & Morran Ben Lahcen, Fondation Ona (Villa des arts de Casablanca, Casablanca, 2014) and Au delà du Street Art, White Wall, Beirut Art Center (Beirut, Lebanon, 2012). He has also participated to biennales, festivals and art projects such as BIAC Martinique (Fort-de-France, 2013), Biennale de Lyon (France, 2013), Biennale des arts graphiques, Musée d’Art Contemporain de Perm (Russia, 2010).
